2011 Most Popular by UNURTH

Banksy in Liverpool
Unurth is not about popularity; often it's almost the opposite - it's more interesting to find the artists doing really great work than posting the big names all the time.
But it's also interesting to see what people are responding to, so here are the most popular posts from 2011.

Fra.biancoshock: W.E.L.C.O.M.E. #2

fra.biancoshock: W.E.L.C.O.M.E. #2, originally uploaded by fra biancoshock.

“When I first read on the newspapers that drawing dumb robots on walls was the same as being a contemporary Giotto, I fully understood how far Biancoshock fell from being an artist.
And further still, from being a street artist.
My "experiences" are not showcases to promote my activities, they do not require any description and they are NOT artworks: they are simply opportunities to communicate and provoke reactions from common people. I'm talking about all those who, although with little or any artistic education, still want to be surprised and moved by something that was left on the street for all to see".

STREET ART GIFT FOR CHRISTMAS!

Limited Edition FRESH PAINT T-Shirt Collaboration with "The Original" KR.ONE.

NEW YORK, NY December 21, 2011 - Fresh Paint NYC is proud to announce the official release of a limited edition t-shirt designed by "The Original" KR. ONE from Astoria, Queens.

About KR.ONE:
Louie “KR.ONE” Gasparro is a self taught natural artist. His inspirations and earliest influences range from Saturday morning cartoons, 1960’s and 70’s underground comics, rock album cover and poster art and of course the rolling art of NYC Subway Graffiti. Specific influences include: Roger Dean, Rodney Matthews, Vaughn Bode, Bernie Wrightson, Alex Nino, Josh Kirby, Syd Mead, Frank Frazetta, Dan Merriam, and NYC Graffiti luminaries such as DON 1 MAFIA,TRACY 168,ROTO 1,SON1,and KEL139. Born in Manhattan, raised in Astoria Queens; Louie totally absorbed the early to mid 70’s graffiti metamorphosis and in 1977 took the name KROME later changing it to KR.ONE.
New York City’s MTA subway RR, M, L, J, A, B, 2 and 5 lines became the surface choice of this emerging artist’s creative expression.

Retiring from the subways in 1982, Louie put his late night subway excursions on pause to begin his musical career playing drums and guitars. He has created art, written music and drummed for such legendary NYC bands as: MURPHY’s LAW, LORDZ OF BROOKLYN, BLITZSPEER, SUPERVILLAIN and current hard rock / heavy metal project RESURRECTION SORROW, which are about to release their 2nd independent album in March 2011.

About FRESH PAINT NYC:

BANKSY - CARDINAL SIN AT THE WALKER ART GALLERY

The Walker Art Gallery has a new addition to its collection - a statue of a Priest vandalised by Banksy.
The renowned graffiti artist has sawn off the face of an 18th Century replica stone bust and glued on a selection of bathroom tiles.
The resulting 'pixellated' portrait is entitled 'Cardinal Sin' and is believed to be a comment on the abuse scandal in the Church and its subsequent cover- up.
"I'm never sure who deserves to be put on a pedestal or crushed under one"
- Banksy
The sculpture has been loaned indefinitely by the artist and has never been seen before.

Where is the sculpture?

You can find it on display in Room three, which is one of the 17th-century Old Master galleries. Works in the gallery include large church altarpieces and religious sculptures. You can find out more about the gallery in our room guide here.

DOTT. PORKA'S P-PROJ@PALERMO UNDER ATTACK

Capitani Coraggiosi, courtesy of Mapo PR

THE HIDEOUSNESS OF THE ART WORLD?

Charles Saatchi, with an article on The Guardian, attacks Art's system and its modus vivendi. Even Jerry Saltz, on New York Magazine, talks about "bullshit" in Contemporary Arts.
Street Art (Urban Art) system is also a mainstream "bullshit" ? Or a super rich people toy?
I don't think so, 'cause i feel a big energy around Urban Artists as BLU, ROA, Os Gemeos and others.

VNA - LONDON POLICE!

Only two days to go until the highly anticipated released of VNA 17!

Fronted by Amsterdam-dwelling British duo, The London Police, our exclusive interview and photos provide a unique perspective on their life and work, and offers something special for fans and newbies alike.

Among many other things, we chat about inappropriate footwear, their signature monochromatic style and writing songs about dogs.
All in all, a feature that captures the insanity and energy of two passionate guys hell bent on having a laugh as much as creating great art.

Issue 17 also sees VNA chat to the always amusing Goldie about cooking 'cliffy chicken', music and his art, alongside Shoreditch shutter bomber Malarky and the infamous Toasters.
On the international tip, we caught up with Mexican miniature maestro Pablo Delgado, Ukraine's own mural-masters Interesni Kazki, Dutch tattooist Angelique Houtkamp and from the USA, graffer Else ICR and photo-real maestro El Mac.
