ARTIST OF THE DAY - FARHAN SIKI
Farhan Siki is
an urban artist whose acquaintance with art doesn’t come primarily from
formal art education; his background includes history and language.
Farhan’s art projects in public spaces – often startling in that the
artist works on them all by himself in months – leave almost no distance
between artistic autonomy and the public space. This is indeed a new
phenomenon in Indonesian art.
Since 1998, almost all
Indonesian public-space art has involved Farhan Siki in initiatives,
ideas and implementation. The visions of the public artists behind those
projects are parallel with the critical perspectives of city planners
that take note of the diminishing relationship between citizens and the
city as an entity.

ART BASEL MIAMI - GRAFFUTURISM IN SITU MURAL INSTALLATION
FROM GRAFFUTURISM WEBSITE
We have finally finalized our lineup of artists for our mural installation project at Art Basel Miami this year.
The installation titled “In Situ” will take place in the Wynwood Art District at the Kohn Compound during Art Basel Miami.
The artists will include, Eric Haze, Mare 139, West One, Poesia, Aaron De la Cruz, Kema, Jurne, Sueme, Remi Rough, Greg Lamarche, She One, Rae Martini, LX One, Matt W. Moore, and Augustine Kofie.
This project has been in the works for awhile now and we were lucky enough to secure the walls thanks to the Kohn Compound. Also a special thanks to MTN Colors for being our paint sponsor for this event. The project Titled “In Situ” is a reference to the Mural installations that in the definition of the term will be made and created for the site specific to this event. Permanent Murals that will be placed in a unique and contrary to traditional compositions.

As graffiti enters its place among the art world as legitimate art form, we have put together this lineup with the intention of showcasing some of our cultures important figures. With most, if not all the artists having an extensive background in traditional graffiti we have tried to bring many aspects of our current culture. From Legends Like Mare 139 & Eric Haze to emerging stars like Sueme and Jurne. We have picked a wide spectrum of talent. International additions like Remi Rough and She One will also contribute, reminding us of how far our culture has reached. We offer a different vision, modernist at times to street art and traditional graffiti. The great part of the Art Basel event that spreads into the streets of the Wynwood arts district, is that all angles are represented from traditional graffiti, to street artists. We now add our version this year with In Situ. We hope you stop by and say hello. The graffiti Avante Garde as some have called it is here and we hope you enjoy what we will be bringing to the table this year.
Also watch out for special guests that will be added to our lineup.
HERE COMES THE NEIGHBORHOOD
HERE COMES THE NEIGHBORHOOD is a Short-Form Docuseries exploring the power of Public Art and innovation to uplift and revitalize urban communities.
The Pilot Season revolves around the Arts District of Wynwood Miami, featuring an array of internationally acclaimed and locally respected Street Artists, Graffiti Writers and Muralists.
In 2009, Urban Visionary and Placemaker Tony Goldman partnered with Jeffrey Deitch (Deitch Projects Soho and now director of MoCa Los Angeles) to create the Wynwood Walls.
What began with a series of parking lots, loading docks, and drab rundown factory buildings, became a curation of high caliber murals from Futura, Shepard Fairey, OS Gemeos, Kenny Scharf and others.
The Walls opened for Art Basel 2009, and now two years later the collection has expanded to include over thirty artists from around the world, becoming a “Town Center” in a district that has grown into one of the largest concentrations of commissioned murals in the World.
This year Artists, many of whom have not shown work in the United States before, were selected by Tony Goldman, Goldman Projects Arts Manager Meghan Coleman and Art Consultant Medvin Sobio of the Visual Arts Collective Viejas Del Mercado. 33third Los Angeles, Mid City Arts, and Montana Cans worked together to provide paint for the project’s ambitious expansion.
HERE COMES THE NEIGHBORHOOD explores a unique juncture in history as a new community emerges and evolves. A progressive urban revitalization campaign is examined in the first person, using this year’s new Artists and their commissions as a lens to explore a neighborhood in transition. The Series is framed by colorful overview and concluding episodes, providing the scope of past, present and future. Each episode is accented by images from legendary Documentary Photographer Martha Cooper, who has been capturing The Walls since they began in 2009. Her Photographs will also appear in a Special Edition Art Book “The Wynwood Walls and Doors” set to be released at Art Basel 2011.
For more information on the artists and history of the Wynwood Walls visit www.thewynwoodwalls.com

RON ENGLISH@COREY HELDFORD GALLERY
Considered one of the most prolific artists of our generation, English is the father of POPaganda, a term he coined to define his signature mash-up of high and low cultural touchstones, from superhero mythology to totems of art history, creating a visual language of evolution. Recognized for his stunning technique and inventive use of color, English’s artistic presence continues to evolve from illegal street murals to movie screens, where he is crowned “the Greatest Living Artist” in Morgan Spurlock’s 2011 film “The Greatest Movie Ever Sold.”
For his first solo exhibition with Corey Helford Gallery, English captures intimate moments in suburban life dosed with a cocktail of subversive visuals, consumer culture, and POPaganda politics. In this series the artist explores the inability of the 21st century oversaturated American soul to distinguish between political realities and pop culture illusions, constructing doll-house depictions of comic-contrived reality to compete against global belief systems. In short: Suburban Surrealism.
Many of English’s archetypal characters serve as denizens of Supurbia, including MC Supersized, the corpulent fast-food spokesman, Hulk Baby, the oversized Enfant Terrible, Combats, the child soldiers, sexualized cowgirls, alien rabbits, proletariat turtles, sad sacks and sinister Grins. Outside, grazing the lawns of Supurbia, are herds of Camo Deer, with coats of camouflage that change with the seasons, protecting them from the hunter’s scope while preserving them like a romantic memory from the last days of baby boomer youth.

CULTURAL JAMMING AND GUERRILLA AT ROME
Walking through the streets of Rome surely You can not see thousands and thousands of posters ... often political poster.

Why all of this?
Today, Facebook and Twitter are the most
used social network in the world and inevitably sharing mechanisms, such
as "like" and "tweets" have become our new forms of communication and
expression, now in real life: D
So why not carry these forms of expression, in a symbolic way, in real life? Why not really make gestures of virtual materials, leading the way ... the web and the web in the street?

The city of Rome is not a
random choice, given that less than a month ago was initially brought
to its knees by a real urban warfare between police and angry, then a
flood that has caused little damage, emphasizing the infinite problems
and deficiencies of capital (the symbol of Italy in the world) is not
worthy of being ... and therefore not comparable to other world cities.

BR1 in BERLIN - DISSIDENT ART SHOW
OPENING: THURSDAY, 17 - NOV - 2011, 18:00 - 22:00 (6 PM -10 PM)
In Europe in 1848, rising food prices and high unemployment fueled widespread popular protests. Communist Europe in 1989, created frustration with corrupt and unresponsive political systems and provoked the fall of once powerful regimes. 2011, like 1848 and 1989, is spurring a similar chain of events, bringing people together and empowering us to grab our governments by the balls and demand what is rightfully ours – human rights.
By acknowledging the social and political unrest of this year, West Berlin Gallery cordially invites you as we debut Dissidents – A Group Show.
A dissident, broadly defined, is a person who actively challenges an established doctrine, policy, or institution. Seeking truth and raising awareness, the artists that we have chosen for this show strive for non-conformity and create work representative of both political and social opposition, making them pioneers of dissident activity. Consciously or not, they seek honesty, challenge boundaries, then create art as a way of driving this message in to the minds of on-lookers.
Join us from 18:00 – 22:00 on November 17th, as we contribute to the social strife of 2011 with works by ALIAS, SP 38, Prost, Emess, Rallito X, BR1, Linda’s Ex, Niark1, Jakob Tolstrup, and Giacomo Spazio.

THE UNDERBELLY PROJECT@ART BASEL MIAMI
6 November- After a full year underground, The Underbelly Project is
resurfacing this December in Miami during Art Basel.
Presented in its
own pop up gallery from 1 December – 5 December, the show will feature
original artwork from 35 of the 103 international artists that
participated in the hidden subway project.
This exhibition will
highlight the essence of the abandoned New York City station known as
the Underbelly.
Workhorse has stated: “The New York Underbelly was an important
chapter for us, but the story hadn't been comprehensively told. The
Underbelly Miami show gives us a chance to present the broad scope of
documentation - Videos, photos, time-lapses and first hand accounts. The
project is about more than just artwork. This show gives us a chance
to show the people and the environment behind the artwork“
PAC has stated: “While the experience each artist had in their
expedition underground can never be captured, it is my hope that this
show will highlight some of the trials and tribulations associated with
urban art taking place in the remote corners of our cities. Too often
the practice of making art in unconventional venues remains shrouded in
mystery and I hope this exhibition will shine a faint light on those
artists who risk their safety to find alternative ways to create and be a
part of the cities they live in.”
Included in the show are street, graffiti and fine artists alike.
The full line-up of artists include:
Faile, Dabs & Myla, TrustoCorp, Aiko, Rone, Revok, Ron English,
Jeff Soto, Mark Jenkins, Anthony Lister, Logan Hicks, Lucy McLauchlan,
M-City, Kid Zoom, Haze, Saber, Meggs, Jim & Tina Darling, The London
Police, Sheone, Skewville, Jeff Stark, Jordan Seiler, Jason Eppink and I
AM, Dan Witz, Specter, Ripo, MoMo, Remi/Rough, Stormie Mills, Swoon,
Know Hope, Skullphone, L’Atlas, Roa, Surge, Gaia, Michael De Feo, Joe
Iurato, Love Me, Adam 5100, and Chris Stain.
Fashioned to simulate the rawness of the abandoned station four stories
beneath the bustle of New York City, the exhibit will attempt to capture
the experience of artists’ that were invited leave their creative mark
four stories beneath the city streets. The show will feature video
footage of artists at work, still documentation, as well as recorded
sounds heard in the tunnel.
Exclusively at The Underbelly Show, the unreleased We Own the Night: The Art of The Underbelly Project
book, will be available as a limited edition collectors boxed set
before the public release in February. This boxed set will include a hard cover book along with 9 unreleased photos packaged in a hand crafted oak box engraved with the names of each artist that contributed to the project. Before the general viewing there will also be a book signing featuring many of the aforementioned artists.
The gallery is located at 2200 Collins Avenue South Beach in Miami.
If you would like more information on The Underbelly Show, artist interviews or want to RSVP to the press opening please contact Darla at contact@theunderbellyproject.

I SMOKE ART FAGS FOR BREAKFAST - ID IOM
So it was the time of year for us to strap on our snowboards and go
find some big air.
I'm only joking as that would undoubtedly end up in a
tangled mess of broken limbs.
Instead we opted to pack our art
fag, oversize cardboard glasses and some paint and then head to
Battersea to find ourselves a little spot to paint in.
Thankfully the
weather was lovely so we cracked on and had pretty much all the painting
done by the end of day one.
With day two having just as good
weather it was pretty much plain sailing as all we had to do was install
our sunglasses, cardboard hand and id-iom brand art fag (complete with
glowing red LED tip) to finish up our first attempt at 3D graffiti.
We
even managed to fulfil the suggestion to have some ash under the
cigarette when we found a sandbag to borrow some makeshift 'ash' from. A
little grey paint later and 'hey presto!' you've got yourself some
wind-proof ash (cheers for that suggestion Dan!) Once we were all done
we then turned our attention to the serious business of having a drink
and watching the Streets.
All in all a pretty good weekend...
