NEW URBAN ART PROJECT IN MADRID
The “Oficina de Gestion de Muros” (Walls Management Office) is an independent Spanish project that wants to fill the empty spaces around the city of Madrid with art.
It was at an art event “La Noche En Blanco, 2010” in Madrid that the Walls Management Office announced their intentions to put the best street artists on the planet in touch with Madrid locals, neighbors, shopkeepers, and businesses who had walls waiting to be painted.
For their first projects “Medianeras de Madrid” (Joint Walls of Madrid) they worked with two renowned street artists: Blu and Sam3.
Now, they are putting together a listing of artists to collaborate with other wall-owners. This effort to provide legal walls for artists to work on is a welcome initiative in a city where the penalty for graffiti is a 3,000 euro fine.
Instead of risking arrest working alone, street artists can work with WMO to create pieces that involve the community and cooperate with rather than subvert joint ownership of public space.

The Urban Art as a business
The word on the street: Urban Art is making a scene in the art world, with works by top artists exceeding expectations on the auction house floor.
“Street art is art at its most accessible available in the public arena for universal appreciation,” explained Bonham’s Urban Art Specialist Gareth Williams, in a recent interview with MutualArt.
“However, by definition it is also an ephemeral art form, disappearing as quickly as it appears. Urban art is an attempt to redress this by leaving a more permanent legacy”.

PIXEL PANCHO - Cenio di uno cane
Pixel Pancho re-interpretation of ENI's brand - Cenio di un cane (Romolo&Remo).
Practice SAFE ART !
In response to the whitewashing of a mural nearly completed by Blu on an exterior wall of the MoCA by museum Director Jeffrey Deitch in December 2010, a "Deitch" brand condom was conceived.
The mural which depicted a series of coffins draped by one dollar bills was removed by Deitch as a friendly gesture to the surrounding veteran community who may be offended and disrespected by such a powerful message speaking of the cost of war, the loss of human life and the reasons behind it.

WHO IS BANKSY ?
He is perhaps the most famous, or infamous, artist alive. To some a genius, to others a vandal. Always controversial, he inspires admiration and provokes outrage in equal measure.
Since Banksy made his name with his trademark stencil-style 'guerrilla' art in public spaces - on walls in London, Brighton, Bristol and even on the West Bank barrier separating Israelis and Palestinians - his works have sold for hundreds of thousands of pounds

His daily street and train bombing activity lasted 12 years, from 1990 to 2002, without interruptions.

SKATEISTAN - A history of Peace
Skateboarding in Afghanistan?
Absolutely. As soon as Australian skateboarders Oliver Percovich and Sharna Nolan dropped their boards in Kabul in 2007, they were surrounded by the eager faces of children of all ages who wanted to be shown how to skate. Stretching out the three boards they had brought with them, they developed a small skate school.
A group of Afghan friends (aged 18-22) who were naturals at skateboarding shared the three boards and quickly progressed in their new favourite sport—and so skateboarding hit Afghanistan.
The founders’ success with their first students prompted them to think bigger: by bringing more boards back to Kabul and establishing an indoor skateboarding venue, they would be able to teach many more youth, and also be able to provide older girls with a private facility to continue skateboarding.

The Associated Press case update
The Associated Press, Shepard Fairey, and Mr. Fairey's companies Obey Giant Art, Inc., Obey Giant LLC, and Studio Number One, Inc., have agreed in principle to settle their pending copyright infringement lawsuit over rights in the Obama Hope poster and related merchandise.
Mr. Fairey used an AP portrait photograph of Mr. Obama in making the Hope poster.
Mr. Fairey did not license the photograph from the AP before using it. The AP contended that Mr. Fairey copied all of the original, creative expression in the AP's photograph without crediting or compensating the AP, and that Mr. Fairey's unlicensed use of the photograph was not a fair use.
Mr. Fairey claimed that he did not appropriate any copyrightable material from the AP's photo, and that, in any event, his use of the photograph constituted a fair use under copyright law.
In settling the lawsuit, the AP and Mr. Fairey have agreed that neither side surrenders its view of the law.
Mr. Fairey has agreed that he will not use another AP photo in his work without obtaining a license from the AP.
The two sides have also agreed to work together going forward with the Hope image and share the rights to make the posters and merchandise bearing the Hope image and to collaborate on a series of images that Fairey will create based on AP photographs.
The parties have agreed to additional financial terms that will remain confidential.
"The Associated Press is pleased to have reached resolution of its lawsuit with Mr. Fairey," said Tom Curley, president and CEO. "AP will continue to celebrate the outstanding work of its award-winning photographers and use revenue from the licensing of those photos to support its mission as the essential provider of news and photography from around the world. The AP will continue to vigilantly protect its copyrighted photographs against wholesale copying and commercialization where there is no legitimate basis for asserting fair use."
"I am pleased to have resolved the dispute with the Associated Press," said Mr. Fairey. "I respect the work of photographers, as well as recognize the need to preserve opportunities for other artists to make fair use of photographic images. I often collaborate with photographers in my work, and I look forward to working with photos provided by the AP's talented photographers."
The AP's copyright infringement lawsuit against Obey Clothing, the marketer of apparel with the Hope image, remains ongoing.

SK8 like Canvas 2011
More than 100 custom skateboards from the hands of more than 65 artists from around the world, including writers, street artists, illustrators, graphic designers and tattoo artists from all over the planet.
SK8 LIKE CANVAS is back in Rome. After last year's success, this collective exhibition, which sees skateboards turned into works of art, is making its debut in a gallery space for the second edition. More than
sixty-five artists from around the world - selected by Mr. Klevra - will show hundreds of custom skateboards: not ones created by graphic designers of a commercial series, but true works of art hand painted for unique pieces.
From Europe to Japan, the United States to Argentina, passing through Israel and Brazil, the artists give life to a melting pot of stories and symbols through different means owning to their individual backgrounds (from writing to graphic design, illustration to tattoo art, from street art to neopop) but remainunited under the common denominator of their passion for the arts, skateboarding and its subculture.
The project began in 2008 on the pages of the social network Flickr, which saw the collection of more than 700 images of custom skateboards from every corner of the planet. From this group, sixty-plus artists were invited to submit original works that will travel Italy for expos and events held under the name "SK8 LIKE CANVAS" and that will open 2011 with an exclusive exhibition at the Gallery Club Ex Rome Monti in Rome. During the opening night scheduled for Saturday, January 22, 2011, a selection of artists will perform in a collective performance of live painting, customizing a few skateboards to be added to the works already selected and displayed during the exhibit.
In addition, there will be screenings of skateboarding video, a DJ set, and toast.
curated by Mr.Klevra, and Marco Dionisi.

Urban artist paying homage to innovators from the history of Art
January 21, 2011 to March 05, 2011.
Judith Supine / Christian Awe / Jonathan Yeo / Helle Mardahl / XOOOOX / Kevin Earl Taylor / Anton Unai / Jaybo Monk / Adriana Ciudad / Stefan Strumbel / Marco "Pho" Grassi.
VS.
Gustav Klimt, Giovanni Battista Tiepolo, Pablo Picasso, Damien Hirst, Andy Warhol, Pierre Soulages, Henri Matisse, Théodore Géricault, James Ensor.
In this exhibition artists from all over the world take referrence to some ground breaking artists of the past. An hommage to the spirit of innovation, non-conformity and alternative thinking of the older days.
Art looks back on a history that is as multi-faceted and fascinating as our own time. Among the illustrators, designers, sculptors, painter, calligraphers, fashion designers and architects of the past millenia, new avant-gardes constantly emerge, establishing themselves to be replaced soon enough by the next generation craving innovation. A process of creation that naturally builds upon preceding aesthetics, concepts and techniques, that deconstructs them in order to create a contemporary art-remix. Many artists eschew this conscious connection to history.
Freely and radically, they create new approaches: the new Art.

NewPapers !
Group exhibition: 108, El Euro, Kurz, Mrfijodor, Peio, Ufo 5.
From 14 January to 20 febbario 2011.
New papers are meeting in six artists connected to the world of graffiti and street art, which will show their latest experiments on paper.
The paper is the main theme of the exhibition, which inspired the name of the event interesting and imposes a limitation to our six.
The paper is an ancient instrument, the sheet is covered by a limited two-dimensional and clearly. Who works in the road and is accustomed to dealing with the walls of the city, however, has provided large three-dimensional surfaces that allow different creative solutions.
For this reason, New Papers is a challenge: the goal is to break the boundaries of the sheet and wrap it up the flavors of the urban street.
MeltinPOP , which as the name suggests, promotes a fusion between genres, styles and forms – with the vocation to be always “pop”, targeting, therefore, to all people – is the appropriate space to accommodate 108, El Euro, Kurz, Mrfijodor, Peio and Ufo 5.
Opening: Friday, January 14 hours 18 / dj-set by 22 hours with “RISI RAIDER”
With artists: 108, El Euro, Kurz, Mrfijodor, Peio, Ufo 5.

After the Rain
Carmichael Gallery is pleased to present After The Rain, a group exhibition featuring Boogie, Guy Denning, Aakash Nihalani and Pascual Sisto.
After The Rain merges and contrasts the palettes of four artists who work in a range of media.
The precise neon color sculptures and abstract mixed media canvases of Aakash Nihalani highlight the raw, candid nature of Boogie’s black and white photographs, while Guy Denning’s dark portraits, built with indulgent layers of oil paint, situate Pascual Sisto’s video and sculptural works in a new contextual light.
There will be an opening reception for the exhibition on Saturday, January 8 from 6 to 8pm with Pascual Sisto in attendance.
The exhibition will run through February 5, 2011.

"Flintshire Banksy"
To some, it's modern art.
To others, it's nothing more than graffiti.
But like them or loathe them, a series of paintings across Flintshire have certainly got people talking.
And they have also had people wondering... just who is the "Flintshire Banksy?"
The Banksy of Flintshire reignites the question of is it street culture or vandalism pure and simple?”
The artist - or culprit as some might term him - calls himself Random, but he has been likened to the Bristol-based Banksy whose political and satirical graffiti on street walls has made him famous - if anonymous.
