Small Acts of Resistance

Black Rat Projects is delighted to invite you to our forthcoming show ‘Small Acts of Resistance’.
In ‘Small Acts of Resistance’ Black Rat Projects brings together six international contemporary artists whose work bears the stamp of both the artist’s aesthetic vision and the activist’s world changing ambition. Works by Peter Kennard, .Masters, Matt Small, Know Hope, and Armsrock will be on display from Thursday 4th November –Tuesday 30th November 2010.
In addition to this, there will be a large-scale site specific installation created by Swoon.
Occupying public space - whether it is within the realms of media and advertising or the architectural surface of the cities in which they work and live - has become a core characteristic of the way these five artists work. They have had their work published in books and magazines, shown in galleries, pasted in the streets and have performed in front of audiences. Between them they disrupt the smooth image that corporate capitalism seeks to spread at once highlighting its repressive character. An interventionist spirit informs their artistic practices and they are constantly engaged in a process of understanding how their work might function in the world, in a way that supports, and not conflicts with their ideals.

WK Interact@Walrus TV

New York based street artist WK Interact work is inspired by the concepts of movement, gesture, and place.
His site-specific pieces have garnered notoriety through the obvious concern for spatial context with which he approaches each location and through his fluid depictions of figures in motion. Blurring lines between street art, fine art, and design, WK Interact has exhibited in galleries internationally and collaborated with brands such as Nike, Adidas, and BMW.
Watch the interview from The Run Up, available for the first time to the public for free, on Walrus TV.

Well done ! In Italy we have not a "system" yet, but artists, passionate people and "newcomers" galleries.
Is sustainable in the future ?

FAME Festival - Angelo Milano speaks !

In your opinion, the FAME Festival, now in its third edition, what means in the international "Street Art" universe?
First of all a bit of arrogance. I hope that the FAME Festival is not classified as a Street Art event, the term "Street Art" makes me shudder. Then, I like to think that the FAME Festival is an example of choice. As far as I know this is the only festival without sponsors. On the web sites of other festivals, i see often logos and brands ranging from clothing to energy drinks and different patronages.
We fortunately do not have anything to do with this shit. We do not have to thank some accessories nor brands to advertise.
What characterizes the FAME Festival compared to other international events like the Nuart or BLK River?
Surely I said above. After that, I'm thinking that these events are handled by many people, with means and structures with support them. FAME is run by me and my mother, who cooks for everyone. My father helps chauffeuring around to and from the airport the artists and the guests. It's a family thing and there is another one in the organization.
By the way, I believe that the examples mentioned by you, like so many others, are characterized by a professional and serious structure, here we use the improvisation and madness. Not having contacts with the institutions, often we end up to do illegal things. We love it.
Can you give us an anticipation for the 2011 edition?
Probably it will not be! Unless we’ll find new incentives, because, by the time, we have received so much acclaim that it seems to make everyone happy, and it is not the purpose of the Festival. I want to make noise and want to throw a bit of shit on local institutions. If I find a way to make noise within next year I’ll do, otherwise I’ll not do. We'll see.

FAME Festival - parla Angelo Milano !

Sicuramente quanto detto sopra.
Staremo a vedere.

GAIA - Mies Van Der Rohe

Mies Van Der Rohe, originally uploaded by gaia.streetart.
"PORTRAITS"
STEN&LEX • GAIA
October 16 - November 6
Brooklynite Gallery
The world's oldest known "Portrait" is believe to be created over 27,000 year ago. So why after all this time is it still the most often used subject of creation? A portrait often speaks much less about the physical features we are viewing, then it does about what's behind the gaze in ones eyes or the telling angles of their mouth.
This fascination continues to intrigue us through the work of three street artists who use traditional and non-traditional techniques to create their own brand of "PORTRAITS".

Just because Street Art tandem, STEN&LEX are widely considered to be the pioneers of "stencil graffiti" in their Italian homeland, doesn't necessarily mean they are content with resting on the title. Best known for introducing their "halftone stencil" technique, these two self-proclamined "Hole School" artists spend ample time hand-cutting pixel dots and lines to compose their imagery which is best viewed from a distance.
Choosing to forgo the common pop culture imagery often associated with street art, STEN&LEX's subject matter pulls no punches. Saints, Popes and the Italian Christian Church were primarily referenced early on minus the often added social commentary. However, most recently and for their upcoming exhibition here, the subjects of choice comes from the historic Italian archives they've rescued.
The 1960's, 70's and 80's portraits from all walks of life are the focus this time around, as they are put through the rigorous transformation of stencil cutting style that is trademark STEN&LEX.
The final appearance of these portraits appear to have been fed halfway through a paper shredder then pulled back at the last minute leaving the shreds left to dangle. The images are for the most part of common folk---young and old. People who have lived lives and have stories to tell. Just read their faces.

Seems as if the young, hard charging NYC street artist GAIA has been showcasing his bold imagery to the masses since before he could walk. Well maybe it hasn't been quite that long but over the past few years he's managed to garner a lot of attention by using more traditional techniques to create his wildlife animals and distinguishing human portraits. Taking a more intelligent, reflective approach to his work, this "old soul" uses wood block carvings and hand-drawn methods to achieve the fur textures of bears, tigers and rabbits as well as the worn lines in the faces of his latest portrait series entitled, "Legacy."
At it's core, "Legacy" raises the question of infrastructure design and how we are forced to live with the decisions, good or bad, created by figures such as Robert Moses, James Wilson Rouse & Mies van der Rehoboth, all of whom have shaped parts of the American landscape. GAIA also plans on featuring a series of faded self portraits called "Sunsets". Sunsets are a portrait of the nature of the street artist as an identity. It's a pseudonym, to the person behind the work and the conflict between the secret, the collective and the fame of the individual. Some of the work is directly painted onto reclaimed street posters and found materials.

STREET ART AS A PASSION

Two years ago (october 5, 2008) we started to write a blog about our passion - Street Art. We have written more than 500 posts, we've covered local and international events, we are media partner of new Poster conventions.
And we're managing a project like Street Art 1861 with 14 italian streeter ...
Thank you at all -  reader, artists, supporter, friends.

STOLEN SPACE - Word to Mother's solo show

'Blind By Stardom'
By Word To Mother
08.10.10 - 24.10.10

‘Blind By Stardom’ opening at the StolenSpace Gallery on the 7th October will showcase new works by artist Word To Mother.
This much anticipated solo show, his fourth at StolenSpace, will feature paintings in mixed media on wood, canvas, found objects and installation pieces.
This show will also see the release of a limited edition hand pulled screen print by the artist. (details of which to be revealed at a later date).
Word To Mother's new body of work invites the viewer to look past the exterior or what is immediately apparent and question what is behind.
Referencing popular childhood characters he asks the viewer to question the agenda of media that is subjected to us, involuntarily sculpting our values and opinions.
‘Blind by Stardom’ is a comment on society being conditioned to worship fame and celebrity status as a way to keep the masses occupied so to keep them from questioning anything. Distractions in the form of everything from fluffy rendered characters to synthesised pop songs and reality television are used as a front to conceal a more sinister agenda.
Nothing is as it seems, taking a cynical view of visual language we are confronted with everyday, nothing is literal anymore.
